Movie Talk: ‘The Mountain Between Us’

An incoming storm has cancelled all outbound flights, leaving a journalist (Kate Winslet) and a surgeon (Idris Elba) to hire a private charter flight. The pilot collapses during the flight, causing the aircraft to crash into the Colorado Rockies. Both the journalist and the surgeon, and the pilot’s Yellow Labrador, must trek through the steep terrains to seek rescue.

“The Mountain Between Us” is a decent survival drama action-drama based on a Charles Martin novel. The mountainous wilderness setting is absolutely gorgeous. The effects are questionable, like in the plane crash scene, the passengers are tossed and banged around as the dog lies calmly on the floor unrestrained. The movie does not go into frostbites or hypothermia, which would be a critical survival factor in reality. The story transforms into a romance-drama near the end.

This movie is one that I could have waited for on DVD or online stream release. If there is anything Oscar-worthy in the movie, it is the dog.

I rate “The Mountain Between Us” a 7 out of a 10.
